Ensuring Excellence – The people making it happen every day:

A day in the life of A PropCare Compliance Officer

I am a Compliance Officer for PropCare and I love the diverse, interesting, and challenging aspects of my job in which I ensure a range of healthcare environments are provided to the highest quality. My days are never the same, but they are always deeply rewarding.

Let me give you an insight into a recent day in my shoes …

I arrive at the hospital earlier than usual, a 6.00am start, to support an initiative to introduce BioSharps units across the hospital – this is a scheme which PropCare has identified and implemented on behalf of the Trust to support carbon reduction and sustainability. My role involved me co-ordinating the movement of new sharps waste units into the building, working closely with staff members, to help them to understand how the new units operate. The roll out was completed before the hospital opened to the public for the day, ensuring minimal disruption to both staff and patients.

Next, it was time to undertake the weekly National Cleaning Standards audit on the Bone Marrow Transplant ward. The ward is required to be maintained to the highest frequency of cleaning, and these audits are a crucial part of our role as Compliance Officers: the audit ensures that cleaning standards are maintained throughout and proactively addresses any areas of service which require improvement. I co-ordinate with a wide range of stakeholders, from domestic staff to lead clinicians, whilst also being mindful of the patients as we undertake these tasks in a live hospital environment. For this, diligence is key, and we pride ourselves in being meticulous when it comes to ensuring work on the ground is delivered against national standards. Data from these audits is collated and studied, and we use the results to further improve the service.

As midday approached, I found myself on the roof, dressed in my personal protective equipment for a live spot check of an air handling unit maintenance. I was joined by a Hard FM manager, who is a subject expert on ventilation. We ran through a checklist for the unit to ensure it is maintained and functional, I ensure that all maintenance records are complete to evidence compliance. Maintaining the plant and equipment of the building is critical to ensure the environment is compliant for patient services.

In the afternoon, I met in with an engineer who was using a high-tech drone to clean the windows around the building. This is a new initiative which improves health & safety, I made sure that the method statements and risk assessments to for the work had been adhered to and the areas was safe for patients, staff and visitors.

Finally, it was time for paperwork: reviewing planned maintenance records to ensure assets and service delivery are compliant with a detailed audit trail.

After a varied and rewarding day, on my way out of the building I ensured that the revolving doors were fully operational – then off I go into the sunset!
